Julia Henry – Hair Stylist

Julia Henry- Hair Stylist

An interview with: Julia Henry, Hair Stylist at On Broadway Salon in Maryville, TN

Where are you from? Walland, TN

What made you decide to do hair? I took cosmetology as an elective in high school and earned hours for it, so I decided to continue on and finish my hours after high school. I wasn’t sure senior year what I wanted to do as a career, but I really enjoyed cosmetology and I knew it would help me earn more money if I did decide to go to college afterwards, and I’d always have it to fall back on. I always had interest in the forensics field, investigation, as well as being a judge, I wanted to help people.

It wasn’t until my 3rd year doing hair that I can say I truly fell in love with it, I realized I do get to change people’s lives and make a difference, but I realized even more how my clients had changed my life. They weren’t just a paycheck and another haircut, they were my friends, family, and inspiration. These are people I truly connect with and care for in more ways than just making them feel beautiful. And that’s what made me want to make this my forever career.

What was your very first job: When I was 16, I started my first job as a cashier for Food City in Maryville, over my 4 years there I was promoted to Assistant Manager of the video rentals department. I worked there and JC Penney Salon when I first started doing hair because I genuinely enjoyed my job there as well and made some great friends and clients that I still have now.

Do you have a nickname?  Back in middle school, I got the nickname “Jules” and it stuck throughout my adult life, at Hair Plus the girls picked it up and it stuck. Some people get confused on whether to call me Julia or Julie, because I call myself both and also write both, I’m good with either. My birth certificate says Julia but even my momma calls me Julie, she just named me after the sweetest soul, my great Mamaw so when I was little, they called me Julie and her Julia.

What’s your favorite food? Pizza, hands down would eat it every day. I may or may not be guilty of doing that.

What’s your favorite movie? I’m not a huge movie watcher, I usually watch them after they aren’t popular anymore. But I’m a sucker for a good movie that can make me laugh or has a lot of suspense and mystery.

What are you doing when you aren’t working? Currently I’m remodeling the house that my Papaw grew up in. It’s a sweet little house and I enjoy learning how to do things from my dad, and it’s especially rewarding to see how proud my papaw is that it’s getting a well-deserved makeover.

If you’d like to make an appointment with Julia (aka. Julie) you can call her directly on her cell at (865)805-6293 or at the salon (865)982-4584.

Tisha Johnson – Hair Stylist

Tisha Johnson, Hair Stylist

Are you originally from this area? I was born in Indiana and moved to TN when I was 10.

Did you always want to do hair? For as long as I can remember,  I have wanted to be a stylist, but my passion for the beauty industry really started in highschool. Heritage High School offered a cosmetology starter program, so at age 16, I got my first taste of what would become a career I love!  Immediately after high school, like many, I decided to go to college to pursue a different career. My choice led me to spend more time with numbers than people – a change was needed because I LOVE people! I made the decision that I would pair my love for people with my love of the beauty industry and fast-forward to today — here I am!

Do you have any nicknames?  I actually have 3 nicknames.  One is “Tot” and it was given to me by my family when I was very young.  I’m not sure who started it, but it stuck.

My second nickname is “Mingo.”  Only a handful of friends call me that but it is because I was named after my great great Aunt Tishomingo.  Tishomingo is an Indian name.  I wasn’t very fond of it when I was younger because it is so different, but now I love it because it makes for an interesting story.

My Third is “Aunt Toochi.”  It was given to me by my oldest nephew and just stuck with the other 4 younger kids.  Including my daughter who calls me “Toochi” every now and then. LOL!

What’s your favorite food? I actually have many favorite foods.  But you can never go wrong with a good burger and fries.  My husband and I do alot of cooking so we are always trying new recipes.

What are our favorite movies? I enjoy a lot of movies but the two I can never get enough of are: The Princess Bride and Forrest Gump.

When you’re not working, what do you like to do? When I am not at work I am with my family.  I have been married since August of 2016 and we have a daughter.  I spend a lot of time with my nieces and nephews. I love that they are so close in age, because I know they’ll always be close to one another.

Leslie Clendenen – Hair Stylist

Lesley Clendenen - Hair Stylist at On Broadway Salon in Maryville, TN

Leslie Clendenen is a 20+ year experienced hair stylist and the salon manager at On Broadway Salon.

An Interview with Leslie:

How it all started

Hairstyling has been a calling for several of my family members and I was hooked by the age of 8. I grew up spending weekends and summer nights at my aunt and uncle’s house with my cousin Abby. My aunt always had a salon in her home, and I would spend hours watching her work her magic with her clients. As fate would have it, I actually inherited several of those clients when my Aunt Becky retired from hairstyling.

The first haircut I ever gave:

Not my current technique

I was at the Alcoa Little League ball fields on the bleachers, watching my brothers play ball when a kind-hearted man mentioned needing a haircut. I decided at that moment that I was the person for the job. That sweet man sat patiently as I chopped, hacked and sawed away at his hair with Swiss Army knife scissors!!! It was the only pair of scissors we could find.

There are people in life that sacrifice themselves to let a kid’s dreams soar, and I will never forget what he did for me that summer day! I’m sure he was at the barbershop the next morning trying to undo the mess I made. But he made me feel like I could accomplish any dream that night. Needless to say, I do not use a Swiss Army knife scissors these days!

I love my job

I love doing color and cuts

I am a creative person and I love to be busy with my hands. Hairstyling is an art and a craft – it is a start to finish project with structure, lines, creativity and insight.

It is amazing the difference you can make in someone’s appearance with a 30-minute makeover. I challenge myself to make people happy with their hair and I leave work with a smile on my face and a sense of accomplishment every day.

I have been blessed beyond belief in this business with clients that I truly love, a job that allows me to chase my dreams and live a life that I am proud of.

When I’m not at work.

Hobbies & Passions

I spend as much time as possible with my family and friends. When I’m not working, I love craft hobbies, and doing anything outside like: yard work, home improvement projects, camping, or going to the lake, beach or pool. I also love to cook and have social gatherings with loved ones.

One of my biggest loves is music. I love it with all my soul and if I had to name a personal theme song, it would be “Lucky” by SevenMary3.  I was asked my favorite movie recently and it is an easy answer – Steel Magnolias. It will ALWAYS be the best movie ever made.

Elizabeth Bowerman- Hair Stylist

Elizabeth Bowerman- Hair Stylist

How I decided to become a hair stylist…

I am from a large family and being the oldest girl, part of my responsibility was to help care for my younger siblings.  One of my favorite things to do with my little sisters was fix their hair and do their nails, especially on Sunday mornings!  My love for hair art grew over the years as I continued perfecting my skills on my sisters! I am so excited to be able to do hair, waxing and makeup for my clients here On Broadway Salon!

I have a wonderful clientele and am accepting a limited number of new clients. Please call (865) 982-4584 to request an appointment.
